Approved psychology consultations

Benefits available to Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Essentials customers out of hospital

Effective 1 July 2026, OSHC Essentials policies include benefits for approved out of hospital psychology consultations as listed below. We will pay an additional benefit of up to $50 per approved consultation, subject to the annual limits outlined in the below benefit summary and relevant policy wording documents.

Annual limits apply ($300 for Single and $600 for Dual and Multi‑family cover).

^Waiting periods, exclusions, limitations and terms and conditions apply. See the policy document for details.

For approved out of hospital psychology consultations, OSHC Essentials members receive:

  • The standard MBS benefit amount; and
  • An additional benefit of up to $50 per approved consultation.

This additional benefit helps reduce your out‑of‑pocket costs for eligible services.

Approved out of hospital psychology consultation means treatment received under approved MBS items as outlined below.

Example:

If a provider charges more than the MBS fee, the OSHC Essentials benefit may help cover part of the gap (up to $50 per consultation). Any remaining gap is payable by the member.

An OSHC Essentials member sees a clinical psychologist for an initial consultation. They have already seen a GP for a Mental Health Treatment Plan, and this is their first consult for the year. The psychologist charges $216.00 for the initial consultation.
